A fatal accident on Saturday morning claimed the life of one person on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, highlighting the dangers of speeding during adverse weather conditions.

The incident involved a Mini Truck with registration number MUS 489 XS and a Toyota Camry bearing registration KRD 470 JD. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the collision was caused by excessive speeding amidst heavy rainfall.

Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, expressed sadness over the accident, which occurred near the Unilag waterfront, heading towards Iyana-Oworonshoki. Three others were rescued from the scene by LASTMA operatives.

In a statement signed by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Giwa reiterated the state government's ongoing efforts to educate motorists on adhering to speed limits as stipulated by the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

"Despite our continuous campaigns, some drivers still disregard speed limits," Giwa lamented, urging both commercial and private vehicle operators to prioritize safety on the Third Mainland Bridge and across Lagos roads.

Following the accident, the deceased was swiftly attended to by officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), while LASTMA ensured the swift clearance of the accident vehicles to restore normal traffic flow on the bridge.

Giwa extended condolences to the family of the deceased and stressed the imperative of road safety practices to prevent future tragedies on Lagos roads.
