Nollywood actor Jigan Babaoja has stirred conversation with his recent remarks contrasting the treatment of disabled individuals in Nigeria and the United States.
Upon his arrival in the U.S., Jigan shared a video showing a woman assisting him in a wheelchair, an option offered due to his leg condition. Reflecting on this experience, he criticized Nigeria's approach to disability support.
“The real advantage of disability in another part of the world,” Jigan stated. “Since I have been traveling up and down, they gave me the option of getting a wheelchair because of my leg, but the Nigerian mentality of not wanting anyone to pity me hasn’t left my head!”
He further noted the stark difference in how disabled individuals are treated in the U.S. compared to Nigeria. “Since I have been going around in the USA, I have never seen anyone like me walking by themselves without someone pushing them! But in Nigeria, instead of helping, they would rather see what they can take from you.”
Jigan emphasized the value placed on individuals with disabilities in the U.S., hinting at a greater sense of dignity and support. “This simply means I’m actually a special being! Touchdown Chicago. Let me go apply for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) jeje.”
His comments have sparked discussions on social media about the need for improved disability support and services in Nigeria, highlighting the disparities between the two countries in terms of accessibility and compassion.
