Some principals of some public junior secondary schools in Oyo State are currently extorting money from pupils who participated in the last Junior Secondary Certificate Examination in their schools.

Our correspondent learnt in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday that the principals, rather than release the examination results to the candidates, had been demanding various fees from them.

They were said to have been demanding fees ranging from N800 to N1,000 for pupils to have access to their results.

Some pupils of some schools, who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, said the affected principals did not give reasons for the demand.

Following the outcry of some parents and guardians, the state government on Monday stepped into the matter.

Already, the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, has decried the development, describing it as an unwholesome act.

A statement issued by the ministry’s Press Officer, Mr. Tunde Ajibike, quoted the commissioner as having directed all the principals extorting parents and pupils through illegal collection of this fund to return the money immediately.

He said the commissioner had threatened that the state government would take punitive measures against errant principals.

The statement added, “Dr. Adeniran stated further that parents, guardians and pupils should report to the Director of Schools in the Oyo State Ministry of Education any illegal demand for money for the collection of JSCE result, stressing that the state government has zero tolerance for all fraudulent practices that may be inimical to the provision of qualitative education for the citizenry.

“The commissioner disclosed further that the ministry’s officials and the Volunteer Monitoring Supervisors would move round the schools to inspect and ensure improved quality of teaching in school; increased pupils attendance in public schools, assist in curbing the and incessant incident of illegal collection of fees and other vices.”
