A teenage girl who was bundled into the back of a car by four strangers in front of her terrified mother has admitted staging her own kidnapping.

Karol Sanchez, 16, sparked a major police manhunt after she was supposedly snatched from a street in the Bronx, New York, at 11.20pm on Monday night.

Blurry CCTV footage from the scene showed a group of four men pull up in a car and seize the girl before driving off as her panicked mother attempted to stop them.

One witness told CBS: “She was just screaming ‘My daughter, my daughter, my God, someone please help me'. She was screaming hysterically.

"And I was looking, wondering what was going on. She was just screaming in the street."

Ms Sanchez, who is from Dutchess County, New York, had been staying with relatives in the Bronx when the incident took place.

New York police officers issued an urgent missing person's alert for the teen and enlisted the help of social media to help track her down.

The department also offered a $2,500 (£1,900) reward for information.

But on Tuesday, stunned witnesses said they saw a 'shaken up' Ms Sanchez return to the scene and hand herself into awaiting officers.

“We was at the pole over there, looking at her picture, and we walked up the block, she was crossing the street to to the the cop car, and I was like ‘Yo, that’s her right there,'” said Tommy Feliciano.

“She was shaken up. She was bending over, grabbing her knees, and discussing with the police. And that’s when they took her into the parking garage for questioning,” Zani Koxha added.

In the latest video, the teenage girl, flanked by relatives, is seen being escorted to an waiting police car which took her to nearby police station.

After being pressed by officers, she admitted to staging the abduction and said 'family problems' were to blame.

It is understood that the teen's family wanted to return to their home country of Honduras, something which the girl reportedly refused to do.

Officers are still looking for the four men involved in the abduction and will conduct further enquiries to determine whether charges will be brought.
