Akponye Alphonsus, a recent kidnapping victim, has filed a lawsuit against a private bus company, alleging negligence that led to his abduction. Alphonsus claims that on March 31, 2024, he purchased a ticket at the bus company’s Abuja park for an 8 am departure, with an expected arrival time of 5 pm the same day. However, the bus did not depart until shortly after 10 am.
In his statement of claim, Alphonsus asserts that the bus was in poor condition from the outset. Shortly after beginning the journey, the vehicle experienced a tire problem, requiring an immediate stop to replace the faulty tire. Unfortunately, the spare tire used was also defective.
Alphonsus recounted in his witness statement that the “already compromised tire burst on the highway, causing the driver to lose control. We survived the horrific accident by the grace of God.”
He added that it took nearly four hours for the driver to fix the tire due to a lack of proper tools. During this time, Alphonsus and other passengers were kidnapped by criminals who exploited the vehicle's breakdown.
Held captive for three days, Alphonsus was eventually released after his family managed to raise the N5 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers. The traumatic experience exacerbated his existing health issues, requiring hospitalization upon his release.
Through his lawyer, Ikechukwu Uzuegbu, Alphonsus is seeking N13 million in damages, including N10 million for general damages and N3 million for legal fees, from the transport company.
