34263  Forum / Law and Crime / JUST IN! Two Nigerian Men Arrested In India For Drug Trafficking on: 17-05-2017 04:22 PM

The Punjab police has arrested two Nigerian nationals from Delhi for allegedly supplying drugs in the state.
Austin and Edeh were arrested from Vikaspuri in New Delhi, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Ludhiana, Virinder Singh Hayer said today.
He said the two Nigerians were arrested on the basis of details revealed during interrogation by a man named Balbir Singh, who had been arrested on May 4, for allegedly supplying heroin.
During interrogation, the arrested Nigerians disclosed that one packet containing one kg heroin was buried at a deserted place near a brick klin Chowkiman and another packet had been hidden near the railway platform in Mullanpur, the DIG claimed.
"Police have recovered the heroin from the two places," he said.
Hayer said that the drugs were being supplied to them from "across the border" and were delivered as per the instructions received from their mastermind.
Austin had come to India five years back on a business visa and married an Indian citizen woman, who hails from Manipur, the DIG said.
A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against both the accused.
"The accused covered their illegal acts by presenting themselves as businessmen dealing in spare parts of vehicles.
A car has also been recovered from them," the DIG said.
Police has identified the drug supply chain and are now looking for the drug-dealers who delivered bigger consignments and are trying to track the masterminds behind them, he added.
34264  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EXPOSE! Check Out The Dilapidated Road Leading To Ex President, Goodluck Jonathan's Village -Photos on: 17-05-2017 04:10 PM

Emmanuel Okechukwu is an indigene of Enugu state. He was seen sitting helplessly along the road leading to Otuoke, home of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Okechukwu, 42, has almost lost contact with his family in Enugu, although he remembers the name of the village. He was sitting on a stool by one of the bad spots along the road leading to the village.
When asked what he does there daily, he said he sat there assisting drivers to take care of the road to the village. He told our Correspondent that he has been there for long, his business is to help drivers so that their vehicles do not have much problem while passing through the pothole ridden road to Otuoke. And by so doing he gets little money from some good drivers.
Part of the bad spots in the road to Mr. Jonathan's village
Quote
“I saw the road that it is actually bad, I decided to take care of it on my own. I’m just putting my effort so that our people can move through it. This road got bad since 2012 when the flood entered the area and spoilt the road. And since then, it has been like that.
“Any driver that passes by gives me some money and I use it for myself. I don’t have any work that I am doing,”
42 year old Okechukwu told a reporter who visited Otuoke for a firsthand information on development in the former president’s village.
Although Dr. Goodluck Jonathan made significant impact in the country in his 8 years at the federal seat of power, the road leading to Otuoke, his country home in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa state, leaves much to be desired.
Driving through Yenagoa to Otuoke, pot holes are much on the road. Besides potholes, sections of the road are broken, a development which has consistently led to drivers battling on the road during the raining season.
An indigene of the area whom our reporter ran into said his car was badly affected by the bad nature of the road, hence he was at that moment finding his way to the mechanic to put the vehicle in order.
Residents have described the road as being in deplorable condition. Ologi Damiete said the condition of the road had become worse since the last rainy season as vehicles now found it difficult to pass through.
A staff of the Federal University, Otuoke, Damiete appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the residents and fix the road for them.
Quote
“The condition of this road has become worse since the flood that submerged the whole community and there has not been any preventive measure to forestall future occurrence.
“I am calling on all the relevant authorities to look into the matter because it has become unbearable. Our vehicles have been damaged because of the road,”
.
Another resident, Oweide Odo, urged the state government to make more efforts toward checking flooding in the state, pointing out that flood had destroyed many roads in the oil rich Bayelsa state.
He said that the people are suffering and government had the responsibility to alleviate their agony by providing roads and other infrastructure for them.
A taxi driver, Babatunde Adeola, said the road was already in a bad shape before the flood destroyed it completely.
He implored the Bayelsa state government and the Niger Delta Development Commission to come to the aid of the people of Otuoke and Onuegbum communities as well as students and staff of the university.
For the chairman of the community development committee, Oguanisi Akpufu, the road is annoying. It is bad. But against the blame Nigerians have continuously leveled against the former president, Akpufu exonerated Goodluck Jonathan over the road challenge in the community. Rather he said the Bayelsa state government should be blamed for it.

34274  Forum / Politics / Army Chief, Buratai Warns Soldiers To Stay Off Politics As Rumors Of Military Coup Spread In Nigeria on: 17-05-2017 10:41 AM

In an official statement issued by the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, a brigadier general on Tuesday, the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has given a stern warning to army officials to stay off politics and politically related activities.
Buratai said;
Quote
“This is to inform the public that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, has received information that some individuals have been approaching some officers and soldiers for undisclosed political reasons. On the basis of that, he has warned such persons to desist from these acts.”

Although Usman did not disclose the

“political reasons”
, but military sources reevaled that the Army hierarchy was disturbed by rumours of a coup being planned by junior officers.
While speaking to a correspondent, a top military official said that Buratai, a lieutenant general, had even raised the issue with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and promised to nip it in the bud.
The concern may have informed Buratai’s decision to reshuffle the postings of top military generals last week.
The rumours worsened following President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent sickness that saw him travelling to London for further treatment, weeks after he spent over 50 days in London for medical reasons. Like in his previous trip, the president wrote the National Assembly transferring powers to his deputy, Osinbajo.
On Tuesday, the army chief warned all officers and soldiers interested in politics to resign their commission or apply for voluntary discharge forthwith
Quote
“Any officer or soldier of Nigerian Army found to be hobnobbing with such elements or engaged in unprofessional conducts such as politicking would have himself or herself to blame,”
the army spokesperson said.
Usman reiterated that the Nigerian Army will remain apolitical and respect the Nigerian constitution at all times.
34275  Forum / Politics / Ministry Of Finance, Kemi Adeosun Says FG Is Working On 2,500 Information Given By Whistle-Blowers on: 17-05-2017 10:05 AM

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, said the Federal Government had got more than 2,500 tips that could lead to loot recovery and blocking of leakages.
Adeosun said this during a town hall meeting in Abuja in Tuesday where other ministers took turns to highlight the achievements of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
They concluded that the anti-corruption war was succeeding.
Adeosun said, “On the other measures we are using to fight corruption, apart from the TSA (Treasury Single Account), you all know about the whistle-blower policy, which has helped to make every Nigerian a detective. As we know, the policy says if you know something, say something and patriotic Nigerians are now saying a lot of things.
“We have over 2,500 tips from various quarters. They are not just the big monies that we see in the papers, but the other monies, like someone diverting the money of a university. We go in there and we stop it. I think the fight against corruption is the people’s fight.
“Note that not all the whistle-blowers are looking for rewards. Some are just patriotic citizens. Now that everyone has embraced the policy, this has become a national fight against corruption.

An aircraftman of the Nigerian Air Force, Ben Kalu, who allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Solape Oladipupo, at the NAF base in Makurdi, Benue State, will be court-martialed on Friday.
Kalu, who has been in custody for over two months at the NAF Tactical Command, Makurdi, would begin the process of court-martial on Friday, after which he would be handed over to the appropriate security agency for prosecution.
Recall that the suspect had on Sunday, March 12, shot dead Oladipupo, popularly called Shomzy, in her apartment at the base, on the grounds that she was unfaithful in their romantic affair.
The air force authorities had since taken Kalu for psychiatric tests in the course of their investigation.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, confirmed the court-martial, adding that it would “take place shortly.”
He said, “We have a procedure in the military and we don’t jump the process. There is a disciplinary committee which goes through investigations, boards of enquiry, summary of evidence and so on.
“The last stage is the convening of the court-martial. From all indications, we are at that stage now and it will take place between this week and next week. It will take place shortly. The NAF can never sweep the matter under the carpet, because the crime was an embarrassment to the service.”
34278  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / This Is The Reason Nigeria Produced Rice Is More Expensive Than The Imported Rice - Audu Ogbeh on: 16-05-2017 04:27 PM

Mr Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture, on Tuesday, gave reasons why Nigeria rice is more expensive than imported rice, despite government efforts.
Naijapals reports that Mr. Ogbeh, while responding to questions at a Town Hall meeting in Abuja, said one of the major reasons was that most of the imported rice was subsided by the foreign governments.
He said most of the imported rice are from Vietnam, India and Thailand.
Thailand subsides the export of rice, the minister said.
He explained that the imported rice arrive at about 9,000 per bag, and are then sold at about N13,000 per bag to consumers unlike the local rice sold at about N16,000 per bag.
Mr. Ogbeh also lamented the interest rates for farming loans.
“Our interest rates in this country is higher that the interest rate in most parts of the world,” he said.
Another reason for the high cost of local rice, the minister said, is the price of diesel to run generators in the farms.
“Diesel went from N180 per litre to N300,” he said.
The minister said the federal government was very considered about the high cost of local rice and he would be having a meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun to discuss rice prices among other matters.
The federal government through its Anchor Borrowers Programme has invested billions of naira in assisting mainly local rice farmers, with rice being the country’s most consumed food.
“In the next one month, you’ll have Nigerian rice in the shop at the best price we’ve ever had,” the minister said.
