A suspected drug kingpin, identified as Sumaila Ata, also known as Summy, met his demise in a confrontation with security agencies in Ajaka, Igalamela Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Confirmation of Ata's death was provided by Cosmas Ilemona Atabor, the Transition Chairman of the Local Government, during a briefing with journalists on Saturday.

Detailing the circumstances surrounding Ata's demise, Atabor lamented the unfortunate incident, stating, "It’s unfortunate news that a suspected drug kingpin, Sumaila Ata, AKA Summy, was fatally shot on April 19, 2024, in the peaceful town of Ajaka within Igalamela/Odolu Local Government."

He continued, "This incident casts a shadow over our community’s reputation. Let us pray for the soul of the deceased and for positive change among our youth. Amen."

Atabor highlighted Ata's status as a prime target for security agencies, noting repeated attempts to evade capture until his eventual demise. According to Atabor, credible intelligence led security forces to Ata, who was reportedly in possession of a significant shipment of illegal drugs intended for distribution to unsuspecting individuals.

Describing the encounter that led to Ata's death, Atabor explained, "When security agents tracked him down, members of his gang tried to obstruct his arrest while he attempted to escape on a red motorcycle. During the pursuit, he brandished a weapon, leading to his fatal shooting by the agents."

While acknowledging the regrettable nature of the incident, Atabor underscored the vital role of security agencies in combating crime for the welfare of the community.

Atabor refuted circulating rumors alleging his involvement in providing a list of individuals for "liquidation" by security agencies, labeling such claims as false. He reaffirmed his commitment to peace and non-violence, urging caution in spreading unverified information.

In a call to action, Atabor urged the public to collaborate with his administration in eradicating drug-related crimes and other social ills in the community, Kogi State, and Nigeria at large.

Among the items recovered from the deceased suspect were a motorcycle, a locally made pistol, and a quantity of hard drugs suspected to be cannabis sativa.
